In his March 30 Commentary section article, George McGovern makes the same stale claim that Hillary Rodham Clinton and her comrades have been making for months: "Not one American should be denied access to health care." Sadly, most people probably find nothing wrong with that statement. As Mr. McGovern points out, "as a society, we have finally come to believe everyone has a right to basic medical services." The only real "debate" is over how the government should take over the practice of medicine altogether. Mr. McGovern's claim rests on the premise that "health care" is a commodity that the government has a right to seize and redistribute at whim. The problem with this view is that without the mental and physical effort of doctors (and other medical professionals) there is no health care in the first place. If the government has a right to control the distribution of health care, it logically follows that the government has a right to the lives and the minds of the individuals who provide it. This used to be called slavery. Health care is not a right -- no matter how often you hear otherwise. Health care is the consequence of heroic efforts on the part of individual doctors, who have every right to charge what the market permits. If we take away the right of medical professionals to set their own fees, we will undermine their independence and chase the best ones into early retirement. Health care is only as good as the professionals who provide it. If we eliminate the rights of health care providers, we will get exactly what we deserve.
