The recent visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the United States was a disgusting display of hypocrisy. China's violations of individual rights are well known. These include forced abortions, denial of religious freedom and restrictions on freedom of speech and association. Furthermore, China is not capitalistic, as nearly everybody assumes. The Chinese government enjoys de facto control of the economy. This means that producers are allowed to be free only so long as the government sees fit. Under such a system, "private" property exists in name only. Government authorities enjoy the right to revoke ownership rights at any time for any reason. Mr. Zemin justifies his dictatorship by claiming that people must have food and shelter before they are "granted" other rights. This sort of logic represents a basic contradiction upon which all dictators and control freaks depend: "In order to gain freedom, you must first give it up to me." Ominously, American leaders are relying on the same tactic. "You can't have freedom if you're choking from lung cancer," they tell us as they loot the tobacco companies and outlaw advertising. "You can't have freedom without guaranteed health care," they tell us as they nationalize the health care industry. "You can't have freedom if your kids are able to watch violent television shows," they tell us as they force networks to institute a government-approved rating system. It is not government's job to decide how much freedom we should have. Freedom from fraud and coercion is a person's natural, inalienable right. Americans need to wake up and face this situation very soon. Otherwise, we may end up like the Chinese, choking in a communist dictatorship masquerading as a free country.
