The real outrage about Rush Limbaugh's comments is that he would even dare suggest that in our society today people are sometimes favored for their race. Yet many people can relate an experience in which there was good reason to believe that a member of a favored minority or pressure group was advanced for a reason other than competence. Racism refers to placing concerns of race above concerns of competence and character. In the past we refused to see competence and virtue in members of minority groups; today we refuse to see flaws. Perhaps Mr. Limbaugh shouldn't have expressed his political or social views as an ESPN host. At the same time, he shouldn't be condemned by hypocrites who know, from their own experiences, that he had a point.
