I am shocked and embarrassed by the recent efforts of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance to advocate the use of force (through government regulation or lawsuit) against the radio station WMZQ when the station refused to air a gay rights commercial. Radio stations are still private property in this country, as is the rest of the media. Newspapers and electronic media should never be forced to run ads they do not choose to run. Imagine if the Washington Blade were forced to run ads promoting fundamentalist Christian groups. It [is] argued that the manager of WMZQ ultimately decided to air the ad on his own. Give me a break. One's freedom to choose ends where a gun -- or the power of a government bureaucrat -- begins. Of what use is a "Human Rights" statute if it violates the rights of individuals to do what they please with their own property? Today's victim of the statute is WMZQ. Who knows who tomorrow's victim will be?
