SpaceShip One pilot Michael Melvill's triumph shows that we don't need the government to take us into space. Indeed, it shows that the profit motive and the private sector are the only means through which space will ever be turned into something valuable for human beings. NASA can't conquer space any more than a huge, politicized government agency could have settled and won the American West. Science, reason and technology brought man to the moon; the government merely went along for the ride.
