President Bush is saying we have to strengthen economic sanctions against Iran, as evidence mounts that it's building nuclear weapons. Does anyone really think that sanctions will work as well with Iran as they did with Iraq back in the 1990s ("28 years later, U.S. and Iran decide talking might help," Editorial, Tuesday)? Saddam Hussein at least played the game by going through United Nations inspections. I doubt Iran will play too many games. It consistently calls the United States evil and treats our country as such. The Iranians arrogantly work on building nuclear weapons and most surely will use them. The peace talks that Bush's opponents promote aren't going to work either. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the like rush over to the Middle East and say, "There, there it'll be all right," as uranium continues to be enriched. It's horrible to watch denial on such a scale as this. When the inevitable confrontation comes, an Iraq-style invasion will not address the problem. At that point, it will be too late. Either we stop Iran now, through conventional means -- or we wait for a nuclear attack.
