Should airlines be bailed out by the government? Absolutely not. It is true that airlines are innocent victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. But so are the rest of us. What makes the airlines special? Why should they obtain subsidies after this disaster while most other individuals and businesses do not? Airlines are hurting right now because most Americans are still reluctant to fly. Yet if consumers will not voluntarily pay to fly, what gives our government the right to forcibly take this money from them? I thought that in a free country, this choice was up to individuals. Don't get me wrong. Government can and should help out here. It can start by retaliating against the organizations and governments who enabled and sanctioned the September 11 attack. The government must save its money and energy for what it is constitutionally mandated to do -- protect us from foreign enemies -- and leave the rest to us.
