John Walker Lindh, according to his attorney, struck a guilty-plea deal with the U.S. government because he knew public sentiment was largely against him. To those who would say one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, let this be a case in point. Men of genuine principles stick to their guns. Because they know their principles are rational, they don't mind holding firm to them. Lindh, of course, does not hold to any principle, unless you want to call nihilism -- the destruction of the good simply because it is good -- a principle. Lindh backed down because he had nothing to stand for in the first place. Unfortunately, the same is true of our government. That the government would ever submit to anything less than a life sentence for this twisted, dangerous creep is unspeakable.
