Everybody is suddenly concerned about women in Afghanistan. Just what we need: a brand new form of political correctness. The treatment of women in countries such as Afghanistan is appalling. But this sort of behavior toward women is merely a symptom, not a fundamental cause. The fundamental cause is a lack of acceptance for the values that make countries such as ours overwhelmingly superior to theirs. Putting women in government is not going to change Afghanistan. The problems there run much deeper. Until countries such as Afghanistan learn to internalize and respect freedom, individualism, science, technology and capitalism, one can forget improvement for women or anyone else. We don't help Afghans by patronizing them and fawning over women or other oppressed groups. Instead, we should challenge them to go for something higher and better. We must tell them that America respects the dignity of the individual and judges all people by merit -- rather than accidents of biology. We don't need to feminize Afghanistan by exporting political correctness. Instead, we should do everything possible to keep America strong, free, and safe. If impoverished and religiously fundamentalist countries like Afghanistan possess any remote desire to survive, they will follow our lead.
