Police in Montgomery County, Md., where I work as a psychotherapist, and the Washington, D.C., area are searching for who is responsible for a recent shooting rampage. The targets: people filling their cars with gas; citizens waiting for buses; pedestrians crossing the street, and residents mowing lawns. Most recently, police are investigating a shooting of a middle school student in Bowie, Md. All of these incidents amount to local terrorism. "We implore the killers to surrender, stop this madness," Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said during a news conference. Clearly, the police chief does not understand the psychology of criminals. Criminals don't respond to reason. Like all psychotherapists, I sometimes deal with criminals in my line of work. Vicious, terrorizing killers commit crimes because they get something out of wrongdoing. Most likely, they receive a sense of power. They can't gain this power any other way, because they often refuse to pursue rational values in their lives like having a career or cultivating healthy relationships. The better way to handle criminals is to frighten and manipulate them. Because criminals necessarily must live their lives on the run, and because they are so obviously irrational, it's not difficult to prey upon their weak points. The people involved in these killings are terrorists, just as the people who slam planes into buildings are terrorists. They know no reason and they will never know it. Pretending otherwise does not instill confidence in those who are seeking safety from the police. It, however, undoubtedly fuels twisted motives of the killers seeking attention in the first place.
