Psychologists are making much of Scott Peterson's fan club of adoring women. The California man is charged with the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci. Why are so many women attracted to the accused killer? Some want to rescue him because he claims to be innocent. They feel that he is being unjustly accused, and that makes him a romantic figure. Women of this sentiment, of course, assume that Peterson is innocent. I don't doubt that this is the motive of some women who join Scott Peterson's fan club. However, I believe there's a darker motive at work in many cases. Women with this darker motive are attracted to Peterson because he's a celebrity. Whether he's innocent or guilty is irrelevant to their attraction. They feel that because he's a celebrity, he's somebody. If he's somebody, and if they can gain even a little bit of his attention by joining a fan club or writing him a fan letter, then maybe they can be somebody too. Such a motive would be merely sad, except for its indifference to Peterson's guilt or innocence. In a culture where objective reality and right or wrong are increasingly irrelevant, so too are the emotions of love, attraction and admiration that many feel.
