Since when did crimes and "hate crimes" become two separate things? To my knowledge, there is no such thing as a "love crime." Consider the recent shooting spree in a Jewish day care center. And, more recently, the white man left for dead after an attack by Indians in South Dakota. I wonder if the motivation of a killer really matters very much to victims (and their loved ones). It certainly seems to matter a great deal to politicians and journalists. A crime is a crime, regardless of the motives. The government should not regulate or punish anyone for motives. Only behaviors, not thoughts or feelings, can be crimes. We don't need thought police. We simply need police. It's not always clear that so-called hate crimes really are motivated by group prejudice. As a South Dakota County Commissioner said about the Indian attack on the white man, "I didn't hear it was racial. I heard it was alcohol and dope." The criminal who kills out of Anti-Semitism or homophobia should be punished the same as a criminal who kills for no particular racial or social motive. This is the only way to achieve a fair, objective and consistent system of justice. Sometimes, hate is even a good thing. It's rational to hate Hitler, isn't it? Or to hate the twisted soul who shot at innocent children in a day care center and then smirked about it? If we reject hate on principle, we will encourage the very things we hope to extinguish.
