Socialist-leaning France suffers from a 22 percent unemployment rate among youths. Not surprisingly, the government tried to lift some of the restrictions on employers that make it so hard for business to function. The result? Massive protests. Many French want the results of the good life without the conditions that foster business and productivity. They want socialism without having to call it socialism and without the standard result of socialism: economic stagnation followed by decline. When I saw protesters in France, I didn't feel inspired by idealistic advocates of freedom. I saw a bunch of upset young people who want the benefits of freedom without any of the costs. No wonder they hate the Americans. The United States reminds them that they could have a richer and even more comfortable society, if they were willing to work for it.
