First lady Laura Bush recently visited the Middle East to support both Islam and Judaism. On the surface, it may seem like a peace-loving strategy, and while this is no doubt the intention, it will only lead to the opposite result. Islam is not a well-meaning religion dedicated to peace and co-existence. While it's true that individual Christians or Jews could be just as irrational, Islam as a religion has been untamed by notions of tolerance, church-state separation and co-existence. There's no way to make peace with it. "Dedicated" Muslims see the annihilation of all things secular as the only acceptable goal, including the critical concept of church-state separation. They will view Laura Bush's visit as an attempt to create a world in which people of differing religions (or no religion) must coexist peacefully. While this makes rational people cheer, it only infuriates advocates of Islam more. Muslim-inspired attacks will not diminish because of her efforts. If anything, they will increase.
