Al Gore's recent decision to endorse ultra-liberal Howard Dean for the Democratic nomination for president again has the pundits asking: Are Democrats moving leftward? It's not that Democrats are moving left. It's that both parties are moving left. Leaving aside his willingness to actually use military force sometimes (something that in the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman, for example, never used to be a left-right issue), George W. Bush has moved his party decisively to the left. His extension of Medicare (expected to ultimately cost in the trillions) could represent the biggest Republican expansion of the welfare state in American history. His dramatic increases in government spending for non-military purposes, including education, are issues stolen from Ted Kennedy, not Ronald Reagan or even the more moderate Gerald Ford. History will record the irony: No sooner did Republicans finally take the White House and Congress than they moved the country leftward.
