The stem cell debate illustrates why government should not be involved in medical research in the first place. Think carefully about what government funding of science means, in practice. In the early stages of any scientific discovery, there are usually objections - - especially from religious quarters. In the end, science and reason prevail, as they should. But political funding and rational, objective science are fundamentally at odds. Government, through its power of the purse strings, ultimately controls the progress of science under a tax- financed system of research. Americans have obviously forgotten the example of Nazi Germany's excursion into scientific research. Granted, our government is nowhere near as corrupt as Nazi Germany was in the 1930s. But conservative groups who oppose research on embryos inevitably had to exert influence over this process. They will continue to do so in the future. The progress -- or lack of progress -- in science under a government system is tied to the political winds of the moment.

" Freedom, morality, and the human dignity of the individual consists precisely in this; that he does good not because he is forced to do so, but because he freely conceives it, wants it, and loves it. "Mikhail Bakunin
