We should honor the brave souls who sought to use reason and science to explore the frontier of space. These astronauts represented the essence of the American spirit, at its best -- regardless of their country of origin. The American spirit is the desire to know reality and to use the principles of scientific, rational endeavor to master it. This is the exact opposite of the religious fundamentalists and dictators of various stripes who seek to control and destroy us. So long as the supremacy of freedom and reason is proudly admired by the majority of Americans, our enemies will never defeat us. The Columbia tragedy is an important reminder of just how important these uniquely American values are.
