School Prayer: How To Make The Fighting Stop |

The Supreme Court ruled against school prayer. But this is no victory for liberty. Neither liberals nor conservatives understand liberty. Conservatives seek to force taxpayers -- including atheists and agnostics -- to pay for schools which promote religion. They mask it as "values" but they mean a certain type of values: their own religious beliefs. This obviously violates church-state separation, and the Court was right to see through this. Yet liberals are no better. In their hypocrisy, they are even worse. Remember that public schools teach controversial ideas such as moral relativism and environmentalism. Not everyone agrees with these ideas. Not everyone wants their children to think this way. So why do liberals obtain tax support for their approach to education, while nobody else can? Why should anyone be forced to pay for anyone else's philosophy and ideas, religious or otherwise? This doesn't happen outside education. Atheists and agnostics are not forced to pay for religious broadcasts and newspapers. Churches are not forced to pay for the publication of anti-religious books. Why, then, must they pay for each other's schools? Let's keep church and state separate. But let's also separate education and state. This is the only way to solve the school prayer debate. Provide large tax cuts and tax credits for parents to send children to the private schools of their choice, religious or secular. Allow a free market for education to flourish, in place of our current one-size-fits-all system. Allow entrepreneurs to develop the education equivalent of Windows or the cellular phone. Give parents and students freedom of choice in the realm of education. Then the fighting will stop.
