U.S. forces struck Red Cross facilities in Afghanistan. How could they do such a thing? It's actually quite logical. We Americans cannot make up our minds on how to handle the terrorist threat. We're not sure whether we should bomb Afghanistan -- since its government harbors the terrorists who attacked America -- or whether we should feed Afghanistan, show compassion and turn the other cheek, as we're all taught is the right thing to do. So we do both. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that the United States bombed some of its own humanitarian facilities. When you set out to achieve completely contradictory goals, you will tend to do dramatically contradictory things. It's not possible to be both at war with a country and to rescue a country at one and the same time. The real question is this: Why can't our elected leaders understand this simple fact?
