The efforts of Representative E. Clay Shaw of Florida to strengthen the Social Security system are for naught. Financially and morally, Social Security is bankrupt. Social Security coerces people into purchasing retirement insurance. It also makes millions of Americans dependent on the Government. As a social worker, I have seen the way Social Security pays those who fake or manipulate their way into making themselves eligible for benefits. Let's not save Social Security. Instead, the system should be phased out altogether. Current and soon-to-be retirees are entitled to benefits they've paid for, of course. But younger people should have the option to invest their benefits as they see fit. Let's acknowledge Social Security as a failure, pick up the pieces and move on.
