Israel/PLO: Moving Forward?

The U.S. support of the Israeli strike against Palestine is a victory for freedom over dictatorship. Israel is essentially a freedom-loving, Western-style democratic republic with respect for individual rights. Is it perfect? By no means; but it certainly looks perfect when contrasted with the dictatorial, terrorist tactics of the PLO. Remember that PLO supporters are the ones we saw cheering on television after the 9/11 attack on America. President Bush deserves credit for standing by Israel in this instance. It represents a temporary reversal of years of trying to split the difference between right and wrong in the Middle East. Unfortunately, the rest of Mr. Bush's policy on the Middle East undercuts his virtue. On the very day of the Israeli strike in the name of self-defense, Secretary of State Colin Powell implicitly criticized the strike by complaining that we need to "move forward" with the so-called peace process. Mr. Powell fails to understand that we already are moving forward. Whenever the United States upholds freedom and Western values against terror, dictatorship and fundamentalist religiosity, progress has been made. Mr. Powell, like his soulmates in the Clinton administration, seems to want to move us backward.
