We are partly to blame for this Iraq mess, in that we took Saddam on back in 1991 and then, when we had our hands around his neck, refused to kill him. This was the fault of President Bush, Sr. Now, in a historic irony worthy of a political thriller, Bush Jr. has a chance to right this wrong. Toppling Saddam will only be another link in a long chain of events necessary to crush terrorism once and for all. It's cleaning up a mess that never should have existed in the first place; but it's a mess that must be cleaned up, all the same. Defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan was merely a footnote in history compared to what we still need to do to win this war. This is what most Americans don't understand; but it's a leader's job to show them. Nearly everyone on both the liberal and conservative side of the aisle is now telling George W. Bush not to do it. Reason enough to do it, given the qualifications and track records of the people who tell him not to do anything. This would be leadership of a kind we rarely find in today's world. In weeks and months to come, we're about to find out if our President really is made of something.
