(Portions of this were broadcast on Fox News Network "The Beltway Boys" on 11/24/01) The media, the President, and everyone else is suddenly concerned about women in Afghanistan. Just what we need -- a brand new form of political correctness, for both the left and the right. Don't misunderstand. The treatment of women in countries like Afghanistan is appalling. But the treatment of women is merely a symptom, not a fundamental cause. The fundamental cause is a lack of acceptance for the values which make countries like ours overwhelmingly superior to theirs. Putting women into government is not going to change Afghanistan. The problems there run much deeper than that. Until -- and unless -- countries like Afghanistan learn to internalize and respect freedom, individualism, science, technology and capitalism, you can forget improvement for women or anyone else. We don't help Afghanistan by patronizing them, and fawning over women or other oppressed groups. Instead, we should challenge them to go for something higher and better. We must tell them that America is superior because America respects the dignity of the individual, and judges all people by merit -- rather than accidents of biology such as gender. We don't need to feminize Afghanistan by exporting political correctness. Instead, we should do everything possible to keep America strong, free, and safe. If impoverished and religiously fundamentalist countries like Afghanistan possess any remote desire to survive, they will follow our lead.
