The Army has a new slogan. After years of enticing potential soldiers to "be all you can be," they are now turning to a new slogan: "An Army of One." On the surface, this is supposed to represent a call to greater individuality. In reality it's just the opposite, and the Clinton officials still running the military know it. The notion of an "army of one" implies a single collective identity. This is the same premise underlying communism or any other form of socialistic, collective identity. In a free country respecting individual rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness, the military consists of strong and heroic individuals, not a collective "one." If the Clinton Army were interested in encouraging people to follow their personal dreams, and in the process helping to protect the country they love, they would not talk of an Army of One. This new slogan is the perfect finale to the Clinton era foreign policy. At few times in American history has the military been so explicitly selfless as during the Clinton years. The military tended to shy away from self- interested activity -- such as containing Saddam Hussein in Iraq -- and instead turned towards sacrificial, altruistic social work-type missions in Somalia, Haiti and Kosovo. During the Clinton years, military action was valued in precise proportion to how selfless it was. Given this fact, their choice of "An Army of One" is the perfect slogan for them to adopt. It perfectly represents their whole outlook for the military: social workers with guns. If there is any individuality and goodness left in American youth, they will wholeheartedly reject this "incentive" to join Clinton's tribute to tribalism.
