Slavery Basics

Proponents of slave reparation ignore the basic issue. The basic issue is this: The people who are guilty of slave trading are long dead. The people who were victimized by slave trading--the slaves themselves--are also long dead. In practice, reparation for slaves would mean forcing white people who were never slaveholders to pay damages to black people who were never slaves. It would be an injustice of unimaginable proportions. The anger and resentment such a policy would justifiably stir up would further set back race relations in this country for many years to come. Those in favor of reparation for slavery assume that collective identity is more important than individual identity. To them, it doesn't matter that the victims and victimizers in the case of slavery are all dead. To them, it's not about injustice of one individual against another: it's about injustice of one race against another. To them, it's white against black. Whites should be punished because they are white, and blacks should be rewarded because they are black. If that isn't racism, I don't know what is.
