School Vouchers? Get Real!

People who favor school vouchers are celebrating the recent Supreme Court decision affirming their constitutionality. On the surface, vouchers do represent a step in the right direction. They hold the promise of greater freedom for parents in educating their children -- but only if government stays out of the way. Does anyone seriously think that those who have created our one-size-fits-all public school system are going to sit idly by while parents spend tax money on politically incorrect schools? Get real! Once government money starts going to private schools, it's just a matter of time before private schools will have to do everything the politicians and the pressure groups who support them see fit. And how would private schools argue against such interference? If private schools take tax money, it will be argued, then they should have to do what the federal government tells them to do. This is what happens at the university level with public funding, and it will be no different at the elementary and secondary levels. The only way to get to the root of the problem is to remove government involvement from education altogether. Refund taxpayers the billions they are being forced to pay for mediocre (or worse) public schools. Tell parents that they and they alone are responsible for paying for their children's education. As competing private schools try to earn parent dollars, watch a marketplace for education develop with a level of quality and innovation unlike anything we have ever seen in this country. Until we separate state and education in the same manner we have kept church and state apart, there's little hope for educational innovation in our society.
