According to news reports, Secretary of State Colin Powell urged Israeli Prime Minister Sharon to use restraint and consider the consequences of escalation. But he added: "Let's be clear about what brought it all to a halt -- terrorism," and called on Yasser Arafat to put a stop to violence. Now imagine the following scenario: "The Israeli Foreign Minister urged President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell to use 'restraint' in their hunt for Osama bin Laden. The Israeli government concedes that Osama brought a lot of the hunt on himself; but, at the same time, the Israelis continue to insist that the peace process be reactivated, and that Osama be spared." What would, and should, the reaction of the United States be in such a situation? With hypocrisy like this, who needs enemies? From another report: "They want me under arrest or in exile or dead, but I am telling them, I prefer to be martyred," Yasser Arafat said in a telephone interview with Al-Jazeera, the Arab satellite television channel. "May God make us martyrs." Works for me.
