Pat Buchanan and Bill Clinton have a lot in common. They rely on the same basic principles. Each wants to increase the use of government force against individuals. Bill Clinton favors government force to prevent doctors from charging what they want, and to prevent patients from seeking treatments they want. His health care plan failed, but he applies the same idea to raising income taxes and refusing to rein in the huge federal welfare-regulatory state. He justifies his policies in the name of the "national interest." In reality, he wants to force the most productive individuals (through taxes) to fund programs for the less productive, all in the name of altruism. This is how he wins votes. Pat Buchanan also favors the use of government force to manipulate individuals. He wants to keep American businesses from buying and selling products to foreign countries. He also wants to outlaw abortion and use the While House as a bully pulpit to morally condemn and stir hatred against entire groups, such as homosexuals and foreigners. Like Mr. Clinton, he justifies his proposals in the name of the "national interest." In reality, he wants to prevent superior foreign companies (e.g., Honda) from earning what they deserve so that inferior, yet American, companies (e.g. Chrysler) can "keep jobs at home." This is how he wins votes. The American Founders believed the best government is one that governs least: punishing criminals, protecting property rights and upholding legal contracts. They never dreamed of using government to outlaw free trade, to regulate people's sex lives, or to redistribute income from those who earned it to those who merely demand it.
