Presidential candidate Howard Dean says the following regarding his decision to opt out of public financing for his campaign: "We have supported public financing, but the unabashed actions of this president to undercut our democratic process with floods of special interest money have forced us to abandon a broken system." How interesting. Howard Dean expects people to give up huge sums of their income through his proposal to end caps on the payroll tax (which pays for Medicare and Social Security). However, when it comes to Mr. Dean's own self-interest as a presidential candidate, his attitude on self-sacrifice seems to be another story. He rationalizes that he needs to accept private money even though he considers such money tainted. When honest, productive people making money (yes, even large sums of money) want to keep what they earned, it's a bad thing. When Howard Dean wants to accept private dollars to advance his power to redistribute American wealth, it's a good thing. The socialist ends justify the capitalist means. If Mr. Dean's candidacy continues to gain momentum, watch the hypocrisy and contradictions inherent to contemporary liberalism reach heights -- or more accurately, depths -- you never could have imagined.
