It's considered an absolute that self-esteem is always a good thing. In the right context, it is. But what happens when self-esteem/self-confidence and wrong-headed thinking exist in the same person?
Many people's thinking is undercut, or even corrupted, by unsound ideas. For example, some people falsely believe they should have happiness handed to them on a silver platter. Others falsely believe that they should sacrifice for others, and others should in return sacrifice for them -- without even having a say in the

Rosie O'Donnell, comedian and celebrity, has come out against the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden -- on principle. O'Donnell no doubt speaks for many liberals and some libertarians when she claims that Osama bin Laden's execution is an injustice because he didn't get "due process" of law. According to O'Donnell, America is supposed to be "better than" its enemies, and she claims that we become terrorists ourselves when we do things like capture and execute the leader of the world terrorist movement.
Here are some things that O'Donnell, and people with her viewpoints, have probably not considered and never will consider:
1) Why should bin Laden get "due process" of law when his entire terrorist career was dedicated to destroying

Just as an individual needs a reality-oriented form of psychotherapy, a nation or a culture needs a reality-based set of solutions to get out of any mess it finds itself in.
Consider a bit of history. General William T. Sherman turned the tide of the Civil War, by his successful march through Atlanta on to the eastern shore of Savannah, GA. He also ensured Lincoln's reelection at a time when Lincoln was almost certainly doomed to lose. All this was in 1864. Three years earlier, Sherman had bluntly told his superiors the number and kind of troops that would be required to win the war. Eventually, he was proven right. At the time, he was dismissed by everyone

Dear Dr. Hurd,
Is it just me? I am getting the strangest impression that our media is slowly, but oh-so-surely, trying to convince an easily convinced and swayed American public that bin Laden is actually something of a hero...one who was mercilessly gunned down by the American baddies. How about the 12-year-old boy who was his neighbor, a picture plastered on the AOL headlines. And, oh, was poor little bin Laden armed, or was the poor thing defenseless? I did hear comments to the effect that as he went down, he grabbed his wife as a shield. But more often I am hearing concerns that the attack was just, you know, unfair, the whole sordid 38-minute attack. Poor, poor bin Laden. Will you set me straight, please?
Dr. Hurd replies:
I am tired of complaining about politicians, and I’m tired of complaining about the media. Someone hires

Some people claim there never was, never can be and never will be a land of individualism and individualists. The founding and spectacular rise of the United States will forever render this claim untrue.
However, there is a myth afoot today that America still is that nation. Just because America once was an individualist nation, it is assumed that it still is, and indeed must always be.
This is a dangerous form of delusional thinking. It's not based on reality. How could it be? Millions of
