When You Assume...

What you communicate is based on what you assume. It's best to know what you assume, and to verify it, before you communicate it. There used to be an expression that went like this: "When you assume, you make an ASS of U and ME." Actually, it's not assumptions that cause trouble. It's wrong assumptions that will create problems. They bring down marriages, friendships, business ties--and probably even some countries. The way to correct wrong assumptions is to KNOW what they are in the first place. It also makes for better communication. You can convey to another: "This is what I assume your intentions are. But I might be wrong." This is a lot better than rushing headlong into communication, thinking your assumption is right but never verifying it.
