"Owning your feelings" means taking the responsibility for being aware of your feelings and deciding their validity, i.e. whether they are worth acting on. Refusing to do this -- letting the feeling "go by" -- is self-neglect and leads to trouble when a feeling isn't valid, logical, rational, or consistent with your values. Ignoring your feelings is like being asleep at the wheel of your life. Introspection is not a luxury reserved for therapy; it has to be a daily task, at least if you want to be in control of your destiny.
