I heard a statement recently that went like this: "Don't tell me steps 1 through 10 ... Just tell me step 10." Now THERE'S an example of the anti-conceptual, anti-thinking mentality at work. The person who said this assumes that you don't need to know how to reach the end result ... only to get there. What happens if something goes wrong with step 10? Don't you want to know the other steps to better understand what went wrong? More than that: Don't you CARE to know the other steps? Doesn't knowledge of something imply full knowledge and understanding? If a task is worth doing, isn't it worth understanding? This issue is surely a metaphor for other things. For example: If life is worth living, isn't it worth understanding?
