As you grow older, beyond childhood, you develop common sense, intellect and reason. You think more abstractly and you discern that there’s such a thing as objective reality that “is what it is.” You might make few or no majors errors intellectually, but on the emotional level it’s possible you continue to react to things in a way not so different from how the child version of you did. You might know intellectually, for example, that “Reality is neither for nor against me,” yet on the emotional level you still sometimes FEEL as if it is. Only through introspection can you identify the conflict. Introspection has to be an ongoing activity with regard to the particular problem, however, until the problem is resolved and you no longer have the mistaken emotional reaction you previously identified. This can take time.
