The various plans for government to intervene in the mortgage sector, and the economy more generally, are akin to the proverbial rearranging of the chairs on the Titanic.

Hillary demands that the chairs all face in one direction so that she can better control them. Obama insists that the chairs face in many different directions, but remain under his control. McCain moves some of the chairs and leaves others alone, congratulating himself on avoiding the chains of dogma required by both socialism and free-market capitalism.

Our economy need not suffer the fate of the Titanic. But to avoid doing so, we need to get rid of the captains--not replacing them, but letting business run itself.
