The essence of choice lies in thinking. No major choice, including a career
choice, can be divorced from thought. You sit down and you make a pro’s and
con’s list of your various alternatives and after exhausting all the factual
considerations you can think of, you come to a conclusion. You act on the
responsibility of making a conclusion. You don’t say, “I can’t.” The conclusion
is the “act” of choice—accepting the responsibility of choice—but of course
there is extensive thought beforehand. You know the thought is complete when you
have exhausted every fact you can think of, and you’re starting to rehash and
repeat in your thinking.
